Castle of the Butte-aux-Chênes

Isolated private house on the road to the Butte-aux-Chênes. It is important to know that the term "castle" does not necessarily refer to a fortified residence.

In this precise case as well as for the castle of Mérantais or the castle of Molles Raye, the term "castle" refers to a big size house. The castle of the Butte-aux-Chênes, built around 1830-1840, was the residence of François Albert Guérard, major of Magny-les-Hameaux from 1896 to 1905.

Later the Farman brothers, Maurice and Henry, from British origins, would have stayed.

Its imposing dimensions, ground floor surmounted with two levels, its architecture with a central pediment, the materials and colours (slate and zinc, white smooth coating and grey shutter) as well as the outbuildings that surround it make this residence similar to a little castle.

The guard’s house could be dated from the end of the 19th century or beginning of the twentieth.
